    PIA airlifts another 4.2mn vaccine doses from China

    ISLAMABAD: A special plane of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has airlifted another batch of 1.2 million doses of Sinopharm vaccine, bringing the total number of doses transported from China in a single day to 4.2mn, ARY News reported on Tuesday, citing sources.

    The vaccines received by the country included three million doses of Sinovac, and 1.2 million jabs of Sinopharm, said sources in the health ministry, adding that these doses have been purchased from the Chinese company.

    The sources said that Pakistan has received 10.3 million doses of the COVID vaccines from China in the ongoing month that included 5.5 million jabs of Sinovac and 4.8 million doses of Sinopharm.

    Yesterday, a foreign airlines flight carrying a consignment of three million doses of coronavirus vaccine landed at Islamabad Airport.

    The vaccine doses had been sent through the COVAX arrangement, the United Nations vaccine-sharing mechanism.

    COVID-19 tally in Pakistan 

    The COVID-19 has claimed 39 more lives across Pakistan in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll from the disease to 23,087.

    According to the latest National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) updates, as many as 3,262 new cases of Covid-19 emerged when 49,412 samples were tested.

    The positivity rate of infections was recorded at 6.6 percent, it said. Pakistan’s caseload climbed to 1,011,708 after 3,262 new infections were detected.

    The number of active cases currently stands at 59,899.

    ISLAMABAD: The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has expressed satisfaction over measures the Sindh government has taken to stem the spread of coronavirus cases amid the fourth Covid-19 wave, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

    Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar on Tuesday presided over a meeting of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

    During the meeting, the NCOC expressed concern over the growing number of Covid-19 cases in Karachi and endorsed additional measures taken by the Sindh government to combat the fourth wave of the pandemic.

    According to NCOC, the Covid-19 positivity ratio has reached 26.32 percent in Karachi.

    The city also has 980 patients in critical care – the highest since the start of the pandemic, according to as per Pakistan’s Covid-19 monitoring and response body, the NCOC.

    Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah today directed the authorities in Karachi to impose a complete ban on movement in the city after 6:00 pm as the COVID positivity ratio has jumped over 26 percent in the metropolis.

    “I want a complete restriction on movement in Karachi after 6pm,” the chief minister directed the Inspector General of Police (IG) Sindh and commissioner Karachi during a meeting of the COVID task force also attended by provincial government officials, ministers, Rangers, and other concerned authorities.

    He further directed to curtail any unnecessary movements in the city. “It has come to my knowledge that tuition centres are being operated currently,” he said and directed for their immediate closure.

    The chief minister said that he would review the COVID situation on Friday and warned of more stringent measures if the situation does not improve.

    The chief minister also formed a ministerial committee comprising Nasir Hussain Shah, Murtaza Wahab, and Owais Qadir Shah to meet concerned stakeholders in the city and convey the recent COVID situation.

    According to sources in the federal health ministry, the vaccines will be brought from China by a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane at Islamabad airport.

    The vaccines to be received by the country included three million doses of Sinovac, and 1.2 million jabs of Sinopharm, they said adding that these doses have been purchased from the Chinese company.

    A total of 2,722 patients are in critical care at hospitals across the country, the NCOC said, adding 1,123 people recuperated from the disease in the past 24 hours, taking the number of people who have recovered since the pandemic began to 928,722.

    Sindh remains the topmost affected province with 369,245 cases followed by Punjab with 353,695 COVID-19 cases. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reported 142,139 cases, Islamabad 85,947, Balochistan 29,681 cases while Gilgit Baltistan has reported 7,798 COVID-19 cases and AJK registered 23,203 cases.

    ISLAMABAD: Another shipment of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine has arrived in Pakistan here on Monday, ARY News reported, citing sources.

    A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft carrying 800,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine landed at Islamabad airport today, sources said.

    The new stock of the COVID-19 vaccine will be shifted to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) warehouse.

    The Government of Pakistan purchased 0.8 million doses of China’s Sinopharm vaccine from China, the sources said.

    Earlier in the day, a foreign airlines flight carrying a consignment of three million doses of coronavirus vaccine landed at Islamabad Airport.

    According to sources, the vaccine doses were sent through the COVAX arrangement, the United Nations vaccine-sharing mechanism.

    The United States had earlier announced to send three million more doses of Moderna coronavirus vaccine to Pakistan. Pakistan had previously received 2.5 million doses of Moderna vaccine through COVAX on July 17.

    Moderna vaccine landed in Pakistan today is the 5th consignment of Covid-19 vaccine provided by the vaccine alliance, sources said.

    The vaccine alliance has provided 50,80,620 doses of corona vaccine to Pakistan till now including 2.480 million shots of AstraZeneca vaccine.

    COVAX vaccine arrangement had earlier provided 2.5 mln Moderna doses and 100,600 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech shots, according to sources.

    ISLAMABAD: The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has changed its strategy regarding imposition and lifting of smart lockdown in coronavirus hit areas across the country, ARY News reported on Monday.

    According to sources, the NCOC in its new strategy has decided to launch a Covid-19 vaccination campaign in smart lockdown areas and announced that lockdown would be lifted on 100 per cent vaccination of people living in the virus-hit areas.

    The forum also decided to vaccinate each and every person residing in the smart lockdown areas, sources said.

    It further added that mobile vaccination teams would be deployed in the smart lockdown areas to carry out door-to-door vaccination campaigns.

    In an alarming situation, the COVID positivity ratio in five districts of the country has gone beyond 10 percent including Karachi and Islamabad in wake of SOPs violations during Eid ul Adha.

    According to sources in the national ministry for health, an increasing trend in COVID-19 cases has been witnessed after Eid and the authorities fear a further spike in COVID cases in the next week to an alarming level.

    Karachi, according to sources, has reported the most positivity ratio in the country with 24.82 percent, followed by 19.76 percent in Muzaffarabad, 18.9 in Rawalpindi, 14.66 percent in Skardu, 12.41 percent in Peshawar, and 10.95 percent in Islamabad, the federal capital of the country.

    In Gilgit Baltistan, the Gilgit area reported 2.99 percent COVID positivity while the Diamer district reported zero positivity. Mirpur area of Azad Jammu and Kashmir reported an 8.54 percent positivity ratio.

    In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Abbottabad reported a ratio of COVID cases at 7.95 percent, followed by Nowshera 7.20 percent, Swabi 4.60 percent, Mardan 4.06 percent, Swat 2.06 percent, and zero positivity ratio in Charsadda.

    The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Monday shared that as many as 3,752 patients tested positive for COVID-19 while 32 people succumbed to the infection during the past 24 hours.

    “Overall 49,947 tests were performed in the country during the past 24 hours,” the NCOC said as the positivity ratio stood at 7.51 percent.

    Lahore reported a positivity of 5.64 percent while Bahawalpur, Multan, Faisalabad, Gujrat, and Gujranwala reported 3.17, 2.67, 1.83, 0.92, and 0.59 percent ratios respectively.

    A positivity ratio of 4.46 percent was reported in Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan while the second-largest city of the Sindh province, Hyderabad reported a ratio of 6.34 percent.

    COVID positivity ratio peaks across Pakistan during Eid ul Adha: sources

    ISLAMABAD: The COVID positivity ratio in major Pakistan cities has taken an alarming trend during Eid ul Adha days with Rawalpindi reporting 30 percent positivity, followed by over 21 percent in Karachi, ARY NEWS reported on Friday.

    The sources in the national health ministry shared that two districts in the country have reported over 20 percent COVID positivity, three at 10 percent while five of them have reported zero positivity ratio as they scrutinized 22 key districts of the country for COVID cases.


    The zero COVID districts included Abbottabad, Charsadda, Swabi, Gujrat, and Jhelum.

    In Gilgit Baltistan, the positivity ratio is reported at nine percent in Skardu, and 6.38 percent in Diamer. Muzaffarabad, the capital of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) where elections are scheduled on July 25, has reported a positivity ratio of 9.56 percent, and 4.76 percent at Mirpur.

    Karachi, according to sources, reported a 21.54 percent positivity ratio, followed by Hyderabad, the second most populated city of the province, reporting a ratio of 10.53 percent.

    In Peshawar, the positivity is reported at 10.24 percent, followed by 10.20 percent in Nowshera, and 1.31 percent in Swat, a tourist spot.

    In Punjab, Lahore city reported a 3.25 percent positivity ratio while Multan, and Faisalabad reporting 2.07 and 1.33 percent.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan received new doses of America’s Pfizer vaccine on Wednesday, ARY News reported, citing health ministry sources.

    They said 14,000 doses of the vaccine arrived at the Islamabad International Airport on board a foreign airline’s flight.

    Upon arrival, the vaccine stored in ultra-cold chain refrigerators was handed over to officials of the Extended Programme on Immunisation (EPI) by airport officials for shifting it to its main warehouose in the federal capital.

    Pakistan has signed an agreement with Pfizer Inc for procurement of 13 million doses of the vaccine, the sources said, adding the country is likely to get more doses of the vaccine this month.

    100,600 doses of Pfizer vaccine were provided to Pakistan under the Covax programme last month, they said.

    ISLAMABAD: Another shipment of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine has arrived in Pakistan as a PIA aircraft carried 600,000 more doses to Islamabad, citing sources, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

    The new stock of the COVID-19 vaccine will be shifted to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) warehouse.

    Sources told ARY News that 600,000 doses of Sinopharm were carried to Pakistan from China while overall 2 million doses have so far arrived in the country during the last two days.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday received another 0.7 million doses of Chinese Covid-19 vaccine Sinopharm, ARY News reported, citing sources.

    A special flight of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), carrying a consignment containing 0.7 million Sinopharm vaccine doses landed at Islamabad International Airport this evening.

    Two million doses of China’s Sinopharm vaccine are set to reach Pakistan by Tuesday, said sources. They said two consignments of the vaccine will arrive in Islamabad abroad Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights.

    One consignment will be flown in tonight while the other tomorrow. The Government of Pakistan purchased the two million doses of China’s Sinopharm vaccine from China, the sources said.

    Over 11.2 million doses of various vaccines have reached Pakistan in July, they said, adding a total of 15 million doses are to arrive in the country this month.

    On July 17, Pakistan received 1.24 million more doses of AstraZeneca vaccine under the Covax programme.
