Shrine demolished in India for highway expansion

Uttarakhand shrine demolition, Rudrapur shrine removal, highway expansion India

Rudrapur, Uttarakhand – April 22, 2025 – In a pre-dawn operation, local authorities in India’s Rudrapur razed a centuries-old mazar (shrine) on the pretext that it was obstructing a major road-widening project. The Saiyad Masum Shah miyan and Sajjad Shah miyan mazar, located at Indira Chowk, was demolished around 3 am.

The administration had issued a court notice earlier, citing the structure as unauthorized. Senior Indian police officials, including SSP Manikant Mishra and SPs Uttam Singh Negi and Niharika Tomar, oversaw the operation.

To maintain what Indian media termed “law and order”, traffic was halted, and a significant police force was deployed. Shops in the area were closed as a precaution.

The authorities’ action has raised concern among Indian Muslims who have been facing such demolitions of personal and religious properties for long under Modi regime.
