First reported by German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitun, Suisse Leaks are the handiwork of an unknown whistle-blower who leaked data on more than 18,000 bank accounts holding more than $100 billion.
Süddeutsche Zeitun shared the whistleblower’s data with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, The New York Times and other top news organisations of the world.
The media termed the leaks ”Suisse Secrets”. As for the leaked data, it covers accounts that were opened from the 1940s into 2010s, but not Credit Suisse‘s current operations.
One media report alleged that clients of Credit Suisse includes human traffickers, stock exchange bosses, some Venezuelan officials involved in a corruption scandal, and sons of Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian dictator.
The Suisse Leaks follow similar leaks like Panama Papers from 2016, the Paradise Papers from 2017 and the Pandora Papers of the year 2020.
All these leaks revealed how the world’s mighty and sometimes corrupt leaders stash their wealth abroad, sometimes to evade accountability and sometimes for personal gains.
Credit Suisse has, however, spoken up over Suisse Leaks and have issued a statement.
The 400-word Credit Suisse statement says that the bank “strongly rejects the allegations and insinuations about the bank’s purposed business practices”
It said that the matters presented in Suisse leaks are predominantly historical and the accounts of these matters are based on partial, inaccurate, or “selective information taken out of context”.
