Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani’s eligibility challenged in SC

Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Newly-elected Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani’s eligibility has been challenged in Supreme Court of Pakistan, ARY News reported on Thursday.

According to ARY News correspondent, the petitioner has argued that Sadiq Sanjrani, who was elected as Senate Chairman is too young to serve as acting president, so his appointment as custodian of the upper house can create consitutional crisis.

Article 41 of the Constitution of Pakistan says that a person shall not be qualified for election as president unless he is a Muslim of not less than forty-five years of age.

Backed by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other opposition parties, Sanjrani was elected as Senate chairman on March 13  through the secret balloting process in Islamabad. Sanjrani, backed by the opposition, was elected Senate chairman securing 57 votes against ruling Pakistan Mulsim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Raja Zafarul Haq, who managed to bag 46 votes

Born on April 14, 1978, Sadiq Sanjrani, 40, is youngest-ever head of the country’s upper house of Parliament.
