SC directs payment of pension arrears to ex-judges in three years

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday conducted hearing of a case regarding payment of pension arrears of retired judges of high courts, ARY News reported.

Headed by Justice Azmat Saeed Khosa, a three-member bench of apex court heard the case seeking payment of pension’s amount to the retired judges of high courts.

Attorney general Punjab said the provincial government had no issue in paying pension to the ex-judges, however, the official said payment of outstanding dues in one go would be difficult.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah remarked that the federal government had also adopted the stance in favour of pension payment before the high court bench., adding the Center had also given a statement consenting on payment of pensions during a high court hearing.

Justice Manzoor Ali Shah said the issue of pensions was not judicial, but administrative. Justice Saeed observed that it would be better if all parties find a solution of this matter jointly. What order the court could pass in this case, he asked.

He said the details of the case were clear and evident. He later directed the government to pay the arrears to the judges concerned within a period of three years.
