ISLAMABAD: A Supreme Court bench on Thursday granted time to the government for appointment of a permanent Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) by March 20, ARY News reports. 

A division bench of the apex court comprises of Justice Saqib Nisar and Justice Ijaz heard a petition with regard to appointment of a permanent CEC.

The bench resented over delay in appointment of the new CEC despite the court orders.

The bench had earlier ordered for filling the vacancy by February 19 but the court orders yet to be complied by the authorities. 

The bench warned to issue a suitable order in case of non-compliance of the court orders. 

Deputy Attorney General (DAG) informed the court that he was in contact with the authorities and progress has been made over the issue. He sought 15 days more time for implementation of the court order.

The bench granted more time and adjourned the hearing till March 20th.
