ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan is set to perform groundbreaking for the first phase of his government’s ambitious Naya Pakistan Housing Scheme project today.
According to Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, the first phase will see the construction of 135,000 houses across the country and five million low-cost houses in the next five years.
The federal cabinet under the stewardship of Prime Minister Imran Khan had earlier granted approval for the establishment of a dedicated authority named Naya Pakistan Housing Authority to oversee the project.
The cabinet also approved construction of 1,35,000 apartments under Naya Pakistan Housing Programme. In the first phase, low-cost houses will be constructed in Islamabad and Balochistan.

Fawad Chaudhry said 25,000 apartments will be built in Islamabad for federal government employees while a township for fishermen in Gwadar.
During his election campaign, Prime Minister Imran Khan had pledged to build five million low-cost housing units by involving the private sector to overcome the shortage of accommodation in the country.
