In an interview with ARY News, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Nations, Munir Akram, has strongly criticized Israel for its alleged war crimes in Gaza. Akram emphasized the urgent need for the international community to speak out against what he termed as “Israel’s cruel attacks” on Gaza, asserting that silence on the matter is a collective shame.
During the interview, Ambassador Akram passionately argued for the rights of Palestinians, stating that they should be granted the right of self-determination and allowed to form their own state. He accused Israel of seeking to expel the Palestinian people through illegal occupation, outlining a vision of a Greater Israel. Akram expressed concern over the alleged harm the United States is facing globally due to its support for Israel’s plan.
Responding to a question, Akram questioned the legitimacy of targeting civilians, including children, women, and the elderly, under the pretext of self-defense. He highlighted the global impact of the current situation, noting a significant decline in America’s worldwide image and political damage to President Biden.
Akram pointed out that the United States and other countries are supporting Israel within the UN Security Council, raising questions about the nature of this support. He specifically criticized the targeting of civilians and challenged the Security Council’s stance on Hamas, stating that Pakistan sees Hamas differently and it is not designated as a terrorist organization in the Security Council.
Moreover, Ambassador Akram warned of the potential regional ramifications, stating that the Gaza issue could potentially engulf the entire region. Addressing criticism of the UN Secretary General, Akram defended him, commending his courage in speaking the truth despite changing attitudes from countries that previously supported him, citing their shift in stance regarding Ukraine.
As tensions escalate, Akram’s statements underscore Pakistan’s strong stance against Israel’s actions and its advocacy for the rights of the Palestinian people.
