MQM walkout: Sharjeel defends criticism against Karachi operation

TOP NEWS

KARACHI: The legislators of Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Monday staged a walkout from Sindh Assembly session in protest against the ‘illegal’ detention and torture on its activist, Fahaz Aziz, who was arrested Saturday night during his wedding ceremony, ARY News reported.

The MQM activist was nabbed from Shah Faisal Town area on charges of his alleged involvement in criminal activities.

Following the MQM walkout, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon told the assembly that the government of Pakistan People’s Party did not believe in politics of discrimination.

He also took exception to criticism on targeted operation in Karachi, saying the ongoing raids and operations against criminals should not be labeled as ‘discriminated’. These actions are not aimed at any single political party, the minister clarified.

Memon claimed that the majority of the encounters by law enforcement agencies took place in Lyari.

He demanded that the ongoing bloodshed in Karachi should now stop.

“In the past, the security personnel who took part in targeted operations in Karachi were hand-picked and killed during Musharraf era,” said the minister while speaking in the assembly.
