Martin spinoff in the works – Are the original cast members coming back?

Martin, Martin Lawrence, Varnell Hill, Tommy Davidson

A spinoff of the classic 1990s sitcom Martin, which originally starred Martin Lawrence in the lead, is currently in development. The new series, Varnell Hill, will feature Tommy Davidson in the lead role.

According to reports, Martin Lawrence is set to be involved in the new series, titled Varnell Hill. The original Martin sitcom, which aired throughout the 1990s, starred Lawrence as Martin Payne, a radio disc jockey living in Detroit, Michigan.

The show followed Martin Lawrence’s career and comedic personal life, earning numerous NAACP awards during its five-season run.

However, the series was cancelled amid behind-the-scenes drama, which reportedly took years to resolve.

Now, Deadline has reported that Varnell Hill, a spinoff of Martin, is in development at BET+.

The new series will feature Tommy Davidson reprising his role as Varnell Hill, a character from the original sitcom.

The show will be a workplace comedy, set around the fictional late-night talk show The Varnell Hill Show, and will span eight episodes.

Martin Lawrence, who co-created, executive produced, and starred in the original Martin, is returning as co-creator and executive producer for the new series. Reports suggest that he will reprise his role as Martin Payne for multiple episodes.
