Two military personnel were gunned down in a broad daylight in busiest Saddar area on July 26 and investigators later discovered that the CCTV cams were not installed at the crime spot.
In a hearing of Karachi unrest case today, chief secretary Sindh, inspector general Sindh and advocate general turned up after summons of the court and presented a report.
It was stated in a report that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation installed 168 CCTV cameras of two mega-pixels in the city in 2008; in 2014, 210 such cams were installed while in 2015 the civic body put in 225 CCTV cameras of five mega-pixels.
The report further said Sindh Police installed 820 cameras in the city in 2012, and only 17 of them were now operational.
Then Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah had given approval for transferring control of cameras to the provincial police.
The report added that control of all cameras will be given to police from October 1, 2016.
During the hearing, chief justice inquired that whether mobile phone companies provide data to the Sindh police. IG Sindh responded in negative, saying cellular companies don’t provide data to the police.
Attorney general informed the court that GSM locators were being provided to the police.
