MARDAN: Jamaat-e-Islami emir Siraj-ul-Haq on Friday said that the Avenfield reference verdict against Nawaz Sharif should not affect the upcoming general election.
The JI chief, while addressing media in Takht-i-Bahi, deplored that slow pace of action against others who were named in the Panama Papers scandal for owning offshore accounts.
He said the verdict against a single individual cannot affect the general elections, and there should be no delay as they should be held on time.
“The verdict against Nawaz Sharif shouldn’t affect the elections. The decision against a single individual cannot push the elections forward,” he said adding that democracy should be on track.
“We presented names of 436 people in the Panama Leaks to the court. Inquiry against them has been very slow and ongoing at ant’s pace.”
Answering a question, he said that those who looted national wealth should should not escape accountability, and those who waived off loans and built assets in Dubai, London and around the world should be apprehended.
