A Japan Airlines flight plunged 26,000 feet after cabin pressurisation issue, before an emergency landing in Osaka.

As per details, Boeing 737 aircraft en route from Shanghai to Tokyo was forced to make an emergency landing in Osaka on Monday (30 June) after a cabin pressurisation issue prompted a rapid descent of nearly 26,000 feet within 10 minutes.

Flight JL8696/IJ004, operated under a codeshare agreement between Japan Airlines and its budget subsidiary Spring Airlines Japan, took off from Shanghai Pudong Airport bound for Tokyo Narita Airport. However, it diverted to Kansai International Airport in Osaka, touching down at approximately 8:50 p.m. local time.

Japan’s Ministry of Transport reported that an alert was triggered in the aircraft’s system responsible for cabin pressure regulation. In response, the pilot declared an emergency and rerouted the Boeing 737-800 to the nearest suitable airport.

Japan Airlines, in a statement shared with The Independent, confirmed that the cabin pressurisation system displayed abnormal readings. Although there was no rapid decompression, oxygen masks were deployed as a precaution, and the aircraft descended to a safe altitude in accordance with standard emergency protocols.

There were 191 passengers and crew aboard the Japan airlines flight.

According to reports, the aircraft dropped from approximately 36,000 feet to just under 10,500 feet in less than 10 minutes. No injuries or health issues have been reported, and the airline stated that compensation was being offered to affected passengers.

Passengers described moments of fear and silence as oxygen masks deployed. One traveller, identified as Wang by The Standard of Hong Kong, said the atmosphere became more tense when she saw flight attendants visibly shaken.

Japan Airlines clarified that while the aircraft and crew were supplied by Spring Japan under a lease arrangement, the flight was operated under its code. The Civil Aviation Bureau, after review, did not categorize the incident as a “serious” one. However, the plane was grounded for inspection.

The Japan Airlines is fully cooperating with the Transport Safety Board and has initiated an internal investigation to determine the cause of the malfunction.
