Islamabad becomes first city in Pakistan to sign environment accord

Islamabad is the first city in Pakistan which has entered the comity of cities of the developed world by signing the Islamabad Green Charter, said Federal Minister of Law and Justice and Minister of Climate Change Zahid Hamid.

He was addressing a ceremony where he highlight that the actions incorporated in these accords and the charter cover all the environmental concerns and considerations which are vital for ensuring the green future of any city

Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Green Pakistan Program and Climate Change Rizwan Mehboob gave introductory speech higlighting the importance of the accord. “Mother Nature has been destroyed by human activities,” he said.

He recalled that in 2005 in San Francisco mayors of world cities had gathered and pledged to sign an accord called the UN Environment Accord. The citizens of Islamabad show now proudly claim to be a part of it.

The nayor of Islamabad and Chairman Capital Development Authority addressed the ceremony and said they are inspired to make Islamabad a city which can compete with any city of the world.

A documentary about Islamabad was also screened, and the official website of Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad was also inaugurated. A large number of people from government official, local bodies elected representatives, NGOs and media participated in the ceremony
