Ijaz-ul-Haq

Muhammad Ijaz-ul-Haq, son of former military dictator Zia-ul-Haq, was born on February 20, 1952.

He holds a master’s degree in business administration from Southern Illinois University, United States. He worked as a banker prior to entering politics in 1999. 

Haq remained federal minister for Labour, Manpower and overseas Pakistan from 1997 to 1999 during Nawaz Sharif’s premiership. He resigned from the post after differences with Sharif before his government was overthrown by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999.

He remained an ally of Musharraf’s Pakistan Muslim League Quaid-e-Azam and served the office of federal minister for religious affairs after being elected in the 2002 general elections for a record fourth time.

Haq lost the National Assembly seat for the first time in the 2008 election to PPP’s Afzal Sandhu after his four consecutive wins in the previous general elections.

He left the PML-Q in February 2010 and formed his own splinter faction Pakistan Muslim League Zial-ul-Haq.

After revival of his own PML faction, he won a National Assembly seat in Bahawalnagar (NA-191) in the 2013 elections by defeating his rivals – Dr Mazhar Iqbal of PPP, Mian Abdur Rashid of PML-N, and Chaudhary Muhammad Afzal Sandhu of PTI.

Haq has also been striving for bringing all factions of the Muslim League under one umbrella.
