ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Thursday arrested a key suspect wanted in the murder case of Maulana Azam Tariq, former chief of the Millat-i-Islamia, ARY News reported.

Sibtain Kazmi was arrested from Islamabad Airport in a bid to flee to Manchester via Doha on a Qatar airlines flight. The name of the suspect was placed on Exit Control List (ECL) earlier while having a head money of Rs1 million.

It should be recalled here that Maulana Azam Tariq, former chief of the Millat-i-Islamia and an MNA, was gunned down in Islamabad in Oct 2003.

His car was intercepted by three assailants while traveling from Jhang to attend a National Assembly session by spraying bullets at his vehicle. As result of the assault, Tariq received 40 fatal bullet wounds. All five people in the car were died on the spot.

In the aftermath of the incident, an FIR was lodged against Sabtain Kazmi back in 2003 at Golra police station in the capital city.

Azam Tariq was elected to the NA during 2002 elections as an independent candidate.
