ISLAMABAD: Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Chairperson Dr Sania Nishtar on Monday said no amendment had been placed before the parliament to change its name and there had been no formal discussion on the subject.

“The BISP is the name of an Act and an institution,” she said in a statement.

The BISP chairperson said a number of programmes were currently being executed from the BISP as an organisation including Unconditional Cash Transfers, Conditional Cash Transfers, Waseela-e-Taleem, Graduation Programme etc.

“The government had recently launched a transformative poverty alleviation programme with the title ‘Ehsaas’.

“Two of the initiatives under this new programme will be executed through the BISP. These include “Kifalat” and “Tahafuz”, details about which will be published shortly,” Dr Sania Nishtar said.

Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry clarified on Monday the government doesn’t intend to rename the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), bringing a controversy over the government’s reported move to remove Benazir Bhutto’s name from the social protection programme to an end.

“BISP will continue alongside Ehsas programme,” the minister said while speaking to the media here.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had last week launched an ambitious social protection and poverty alleviation programme named ‘Ehsas’ (compassion).
