  • Small drone puts White House on lockdown

President Barack Obama was not in the residence at the time.

In a statement, the Secret Service said the individual was seen flying the Parrot Bebop device in Lafayette Park at an altitude of about 100 feet (35 meters).

He was detained by uniformed Secret Service officers as the park — filled at lunch hour on a sunny spring day — was swiftly evacuated and the White House was briefly put on lockdown.

“As a precaution, the small UAV was swept and declared safe,” said the Secret Service, which released a photo of the red quadracopter — a popular consumer model with a video camera built in.

The operator was later identified by the United States Park Police as Ryan MacDonald, 39, of Vacaville, California.

That police agency said in a statement that the man was arrested “for violating federal law.” It did not elaborate other than to say MacDonald was cited and it is to appear in court.

Obama was meeting Gulf leaders at his rural Camp David retreat in Maryland at the time of the incident.

Flying drones of any size is prohibited within the US capital — a point that the Federal Aviation Administration is underscoring in a “no-drone zone” publicity campaign it launched earlier this week.

In January, a DJI Phantom drone — another consumer model — crashed onto the White House grounds after it slipped out of the control of the federal employee who was flying it in the early hours of the morning.

The incident was deemed to be an accident and no charges were filed.

A similar Parrot Bebop, weighing about one pound (500 grams), was flown indoors in January at the Capitol during a House of Representatives committee hearing on unmanned aircraft technology. (AFP)

    Linsay Lohan Trends on Twitter

Lindsay Lohan, star of the hit movie Mean Girls and Scary Movie 5, was ordered by a New York court to indulge in community service. The actress has been noted for her religious observances and beliefs in the past as well. She had also been spotted wearing the famous red string Kabbalah bracelet.

Lindsay is a troubled teen, as she has courted controversy due to her rash behavior and addiction to drugs in the recent past. Lohan was sentenced in 2013 to 240 hours of community service after she drove recklessly and lied to police following a car accident in Santa Monica, California. The court also imposed 90 days of drug rehabilitation and 18 months psychiatric counseling during two years of probation. But in February she was given another 125 hours of community service, after a judge questioned whether she fulfilled the terms of the initial sentence.

Whether the actress has embraced Islam or not, only time will tell. However, it seems good to know that the actress is associated with the Holy Book in some form or manner, keeping in mind that a troubled teen like her could certainly benefit from the book’s ultimate wisdom!

Pakistan launches ‘massive’ anti-Taliban offensive: Reuters reports

Pakistani troops on Friday began a “massive” offensive to try to push the Taliban from their last major stronghold in the mountainous northwestern region of North Waziristan, moving in from north and south, officials and residents said.

The heavily forested ravines of the Shawal Valley are pockmarked with Taliban hideouts and the valley itself is a key smuggling route into neighboring Afghanistan.

Pakistani jets began bombing the valley in the early hours, killing between six and 15 militants, four intelligence sources told Reuters.

“It is a massive military action against the Taliban militants and their allies in the Shawal mountains,” said a government official who asked for anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about military operations.

The Pakistani Taliban controlled almost all of North Waziristan until troops launched a long-awaited offensive there in June. The Taliban still maintain control of Shawal Valley and have used it as a launching pad for attacks on Pakistani forces.

A spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

The Pakistani Taliban are allied with Afghan Taliban and share a similar jihadist ideology. But they operate as a separate entity, focused on toppling the Pakistani state and establishing strict Islamic rule in the nuclear-armed nation.

NATO forces, which left Afghanistan last year, repeatedly urged Pakistan to take action against Taliban havens along its border.

Residents said tanks and soldiers were approaching the valley from the north and south.

“Hundreds of trucks and pickups full of soldiers and weapons…are moving towards Shawal,” said Zainullah, a telephone operator in Shawal Valley.

“There are roadblocks everywhere, no one can come in or go out. There is a complete curfew and phones lines are also being cut.”

Several military officials told Reuters that the Pakistani military had requested help from Afghanistan to prevent militants from fleeing over the border.

Any cooperation would be a significant step forward in a thaw in relations that began when Afghan President Ashraf Ghani took office last year.

Neither the Pakistani nor the Afghan military responded to requests for comment. Government officials in the area said they were not authorized to comment.

A resident said there had been heavy fighting between the militants and the military on the edge of the valley and civilians feared being trapped.

“We are in fear, especially the kids,” he said. “We are now preparing to leave the area and shift to safe places, because last night artillery shells were fired continuously.”
