Umar Akmal should learn from Kamran, says McCullum

SHARJAH: Lahore Qalandars’ captain Brendon McCullum on Friday said that he thinks Umar Akmal should learn from his elder brother Kamran if he wants to progress and achieve success in his faltering career.

Umar was dropped from the Lahore side after scoring just 57 runs in the five games he played before he was sidelined to an extent where he doesn’t even come to the stadium.

Lahore lost seven of their ten games and for the third year and ended on the last spot in Pakistan Super League points table.

A disappointed McCullum admitted Umar had issues to solve.

“One thing you will take from me is total honesty and transparency,” said McCullum after his team’s last game which ended in Peshawar Zalmi’s seven wicket win in Sharjah.

“Umar is an incredible talent but he has his issues which is well documented around this place as well. His consistency wasn’t there. And that’s why we had to look outside of the experience of Umar Akmal,” said the former New Zealand great.

“He got a great blueprint of what to do today from his brother (Kamran) and I am sure he sat back and thought he could be in a situation like this in future. But he has to make sure that he is performing to get himself those opportunities,” added McCullum.

When asked about his team’s performance, the Qalandars’ skipper admitted that his team “promised more but delivered less”.

“We are really disappointed that we are out of the tournament. We had high hopes when we came into the tournament. I thought we really did well in the drafts, we saw couple of injuries, effected some of the quality of players we had but took too long to find our feet,” said McCullum.

McCullum, who had a distinguished career with New Zealand , said he was disappointed and frustrated.

He, however, maintained that there was one thing which delighted him and it was the way his young players performed in last couple of matches.

“Last 10 days have been real positive I think if we look at Agha Salman, Sohail Akhtar, Gulraiz, Shaheen Shah; those guys performed really well probably in last 10-12 days, we were under a lot pressure.

“For these guys to stand up and perform like that and welcome themselves on the international stage with their performance was very positive. It was disappointing but its not all gloom and doom there are positives to take out from there,” said McCullum.

    ‘An incredible guy’

McCullum praised the owners of Lahore team, especially Rana Fawad.

“Rana Fawad is an incredible guy, his whole family is unbelievable. Losses hurt immensely a lot of us, disappointing that we couldn’t win trophy for Rana and Qalandars all over the world.”

McCullum also praised Zalmi batsman Kamran Akmal for his match-winning century against Qalandars earlier in the day.

“On his day Kamran is one the most explosive players in the world. What he showed today was just an another example of that. The wicket got little bit better and we couldn’t quite execute as well what we could have but at the same time he put us under immense amount of pressure.

“Thought 170 was actually quite a pretty good score but when someone like Kamran comes up and plays like that. You should give credit when the credit is due as well, he played an outstanding innings and won the game,” concluded McCullum.

Karachi Kings eye second spot, Peshawar a play-off chance

KARACHI: Karachi Kings will be aiming for a second place finish in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) table if they beat table topper Islamabad United in their last game while Peshawar Zalmi must win against Lahore to sneak into the last four as league phase finishes in Sharjah on Friday.

Karachi Kings lost their penultimate match against Peshawar by 44 runs to give their opponents a lifeline. Karachi are pitted against an in-form Islamabad who beat Quetta Gladiators by six wickets on Thursday to top the table with 14 points in nine games.

Karachi will be hard pressed to beat Islamabad as they managed 137-8 against Peshawar and now need to score big to put a well balanced Islamabad under pressure.

A win will give Karachi a bounty as they will again face Islamabad in the top two clash in the first qualifier in Dubai on Sunday. The winner of the qualifier will play the final while the loser will get another chance to play the winners of eliminator of number three and four.

Karachi’s foreign players Joe Denly and Colin Ingram were dismissed without scoring against Peshawar while stand-in skipper Eoin Morgan managed five and Ravi Bopara seven.

If Karachi wants to win the foreigners will have to fare batter besides their death over bowling also needs a huge lift as they conceded 123 in the last ten overs to Peshawar.

Peshawar will also be wary of Lahore Qalanadars who have won three consecutive matches since going out of the play-off contention after losing tgeir first six matches.

Peshawar will have to stop Lahore’s aggressive opener Fakhar Zaman who managed 94 against Quetta on Wednesday. Lahore may also be without spinner Sunil Narine whose action was reported as suspect on Friday.

They may not risk him as if he was reported again he will be suspended from the PSL.

Islamabad top PSL points table with victory over Quetta Gladiators

SHARJAH: Jean-Paul Duminy smashed a solid half century and pacer Faheem Ashraf took three wickets to steer Islamabad to a comfortable six-wicket win over Quetta Gladiators which lifted them to the top of the Pakistan Super League table in Sharjah on Thursday.

Duminy scored 47-ball 54 with four boundaries and two sixes to help Islamabad overtake a modest 148-run target set by Quetta, taking their tally to 14 from nine matches.

Islamabad now wait for their last match, against Karachi Kings to decide who they play in the March 18 qualifier in Dubai.

Today’s victory became Islamabad’s sixth win a row after another slow start. Since beating Lahore Qalandars in a Super over finish, Islamabad have beaten Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Multan before this match.

Duminy held on end intact as he saw Luke Ronchi (ten), Alex hales (16) and Shadab Khan (18) lose wickets, but the left-hander ensured the good work of the bowlers do not go waste.

Hussain Talat lived up to his potential with an aggressive 17-ball 28 not out with two fours and as many sixes as he added 43 for the fourth wicket stand with Duminy. When Duminy was dismissed, Islamabad needed 18 more to win a task easily accomplished with Asif Ali smashing the winning six in his 16 not out.

Quetta were also let down by their top overseas players as Shane watson ((eight), Kevin Pietersen (seven), Jason Roy 917) and Rilee Rossouw (16 not out) did not do much to lift Quetta.

Skipper Sarfraz added 64 for the fourth wicket with Umar Amin who made a laborious 27-ball 28. Sarfraz hit three fours and two sixes in his 30-ball knock. Rossouw and Hassaan Khan (15 not out) added an invaluable 27 runs for the eight wicket.

Ashraf had accounted for Pietersen, Anwar Ali and Mohammad Nawaz in an inpired spell of bowling, taking his tally to 15 — the most in this PSL.

    Ammad Butt took 2-30.

Friday’s matches will decide the final line up for play-offs, with Peshawar Zalmi taking on Lahore Qalandars in a do-or-die game while Karachi meet Islamabad United.

‘Difference between two sides’: Azhar Mahmood praises Kamran Akmal

SHARJAH: Karachi Kings’ bowling coach Azhar Mahmood praised match-winner Kamran Akmal and termed the former Pakistan opener as the “difference between the two teams” in Peshawar Zalmi’s 44-run win in Sharjah on Thursday.

Kamran smashed a 51-ball 75 with five sixes and three boundaries to lift Peshawar Zalmi to 181-6 before Karachi were kept down to 137-8. Both teams now need to win their last games on Friday for a play-off spot.

Azhar said Kamran benefitted from a dropped catch on 22.

“Kamran played an excellent innings and he was the difference between the two teams,” said Azhar, also bowling coach of Pakistan team.

“The last seven overs were very costly and young Mohammad Irfan could not execute the plan he was given,” Mahmood added.

Irfan conceded 45 runs in his three overs, with Zalmi skipper Darren Sammy smashing three sixes in one of his overs.

Azhar said Kamran made the most of drop catch at sweeper cover by Colin Ingram.

“They (Zalmi) got a good start and then the catch was dropped, so it changed the momentum and then we could not execute the plan,” said Azhar.

“No one wants to drop a catch and unfortunately Ingram did not pick the ball. he has been fielding exceptionally well in this tournament.”

Azhar hoped his team will do its best to win the last game, against Islamabad United on Friday.

“We have one more game to go so we will plan for that and we know that it can go to net run-rate but we don’t want to go on net run-rate so we will do the best planning,” said Azhar, a former Pakistan all-rounder.

Azhar admitted regular skipper Imad wasim’s absence was felt in today’s game.

“We do not have a spinner in the emerging category and without Imad we suffered,” said Azhar of the spinner who has been advised a four day rest.

Azhar said Imad will also miss Friday’s match.

Kamran cracked 51-ball 75 with five sixes and three boundaries to lift his team to 181-6 before restricting Karachi Kings to 137-8 and was awarded the “Man of the Match” award.

“We are still far off from the final and the focus is on Friday’s game against Lahore which is another do-or-die game for us,” said Kamran who notched his third fifty in this year’s PSL.

“Every team wishes for a place in the final so that’s our target,” he added.

He was the player of the tournament in last year’s PSL.

“I do my best for the team and not every day is the same but I try my best and I am happy when I contribute to team’s win,” said Kamran, who was dropped on 21 by Colin Ingram off leg-spinner Usama Mir.

Kamran admitted today’s clash against Karachi Kings was a pressure game.

“Yes, they (Karachi Kings) are a good side, it was a pressure game with Eoin Morgan also there to play for them, but we entered the ground with a positive mind and when every player acts responsibly then best results come,” said Kamran.

Kamran refused to accept his younger brother Umar has derailed his career.

“He (Umar) is playing for Lahore and he is not derailed, it is your opinion, unfortunately he has not p erformed as per expectations but his focus is on cricket,” said Kamran.

Morgan hails moves to bring cricket back to Pakistan

SHARJAH: England’s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan Wednesday reckoned Pakistan was moving in the right direction in terms of reviving cricket in the country, hoping more betterment in the next couple of years.

Morgan joined Karachi Kings and will lead the team in the absence of regular skipper Imad Wasim who injured himself in the match against Lahore on Sunday and remained under observation for concussion.

“I certainly think that steps in that direction have been taken. The last year’s PSL final, I believe, was a success and all the players who traveled thoroughly enjoyed their time,” said Morgan.

Pakistan had been a “no go” area for international teams since March 2009 attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus which suspended all international cricket in the country.

    Morgan

But last year’s PSL final in Lahore paved way for three Twenty20 internationals against a World XI and a single Twenty20 international with Sri Lanka.

This year’s PSL will have two play-offs in Lahore and the final in Karachi on March 25, followed by three Twenty20 internationals against the West Indies in April.

Morgan praised more efforts taken by Pakistan Cricket Board of staging two play-offs in Lahore and final in Karachi means more progress.

“I am sure the people of Pakistan really enjoyed that cricket back in their country. More steps are taken this year, we saw international games played there. This year more PSL games will be played there so over the course of couple of years more progress will be made. West Indies is touring there in April for three Twenty20 so naturally there is a progression moving forward,” remarked Morgan.

Morgan said he was unavailable for the Pakistan leg of matches.

“I am not available for the Pakistan leg. Its been a long winter for me I have been away since December so unfortunately I am unavailable,” said Morgan who led England to 3-2 one-day series win over New Zealand earlier this month.

When asked about Karachi Kings captain Imad Wasim’s injury, Morgan termed the incident infortunate but said Imad is on the path to recovery.

“I was in the flight when the incident happened. Imad injured himself, its unfortunate that he is unable to play in a few matches but he has recovered well,” said Morgan of Imad.

Morgan, who will lead the team in Imad’s absence said he will try his best to help Karachi Kings, which needs to win one of their two matches to qualify for the play-offs.

“I have been watching the PSL in New Zealand. I know the place quite nicely. We have a good mix of players with Babar Azam and others, its always interesting and challenging. We will sit down tonight and settle the right combination. Its an exciting challenge, with a lot of teams playing for last four. Islamabad leads the table and they have been playing good cricket, ” concluded Morgan.

  • Multan faces do-or-die situation in Islamabad clash

Multan faces do-or-die situation in Islamabad clash

SHARJAH: Shoaib Malik led Multan Sultans’s fate in the debut appearance hinged on their last match against second placed Islamabad United match in Sharjah on Tuesday.

A win will take them to the last four but a defeat will put them on the verge of exit from the Pakistan Super League.

The sixth and the newest team promised a lot by defeating the title holders Peshawar Zalmi in their opening match but after two wins they were brought down to earth by Islamabad in the first round in a match they were shot out for a paltry 113. Spearheads Rumman Raees (3-14), Mohammad Sami (2-19) and Andre Russell two wickets had rocked the formidable Multan batting.

Since then Multan had lost three more matches and with nine points in nine matches face a do-or-die in their last game. In case of a defeat Multan will pray that Peshawar lose one of their two matches so that they go through to the last four.

Lahore Qalandars are already out of contention for a play-off place.

Malik hoped Multan solve the riddle of what’s going wrong with them, having a formidable batting line up with Kumar Sangakkara, Ahmed Shehxad, Sohaib Maqsood, Kieron Pollard and himself while Imran tahir, Mohammad Irfan, Sohail Tanvir and Junaid Khan in bowling.

“It will be a good thing for our team to sit and talk about and come up with better plans,” Malik said after defeat against Lahore.

Asked what went wrong with Multan who at one point were leading the table.

“Honestly speaking, even I have been trying and our whole coaching staff is trying to find where the problem is,” said Malik .”But, yes, when you lsoe games, even your glimpse mostly you don’t look at them but there are a couple of areas where we really need to improve.”

Like the first edition in which Islamabad won the title, Misbah-ul-Haq led team has been slow starters but are now well placed to finish on top of the table with three games left and ten points to show.

After losing to Peshawar in their inaugural match Islamabad beat Multan, lost to Quetta but since their tied match and win in Super Over against with Lahore they have won three matches in a row.

Rumman is still nursing a leg injury and will not be available for the match but England’s top Twenty20 players Alex Hales and Sam Billings have arrived to bolster the batting.

Quetta Gladiators are top on the table with ten points and a better net run-rate.

  • Injured Rumman Raees out of Pakistan Super League

Injured Rumman Raees out of Pakistan Super League

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad spearhead Rumman Raees failed to recover in time for the remainder of the Pakistan Super League matches and hence will not be available for selection.

The 26-year-old left armer fell at the boundary while fielding during Islamabad’s match against Quetta Gladiators in Sharjah on February 28 and since then had not played any part in the league.

He suffered knee injury and team physio Errol Alcott issued the latest update.

“Rumman  has been officially ruled out from the remaining PSL tournament last evening. Errol Alcott, the Islamabad United physio has been in discussion with the knee specialist who has reviewed Rumman here at Saudi German Hospital, and they’ve concluded that while he has improved a lot, his knee is not holding upto the heavy load on landing impact on the knee whilst bowling and that he should take a rest to recover completely,” said a release.

“It is important to Islamabad United that the general well being of its players and their future success in their cricket endeavours is maintained , so while we are disappointed for Rumman in not being with us for the remainder of the PSL 3 tournament , we know getting him to rest is the right thing to do. We wish him the best of luck for the rest of 2018.”

Rumman is an integral part of Pakistan’s national team also and hence no rsik would be taken on him.

Islamabad faces Multan in their eighth match in the league in Sharjah on Tuesday. They are currently at second place in the table with ten points, as is Quetta who are at the top due to a better net run rate.

  • Shinwari will learn from no-ball experience, says Arthur

Shinwari will learn from no-ball experience, says Arthur

KARACHI: Karachi Kings head coach Mickey Arthur hoped pace bowler Usman Shinwari will learn from the bitter experience of delivering a no-ball which tied the match against Lahore Qalandars before they lost in Super over in Dubai on Sunday.

Needing 16 to overhaul Karachi Kings’s 163-5, Lahore batsman Sohail Akhtar took a couple, hit a boundary and then smashed a six to bring the target to four off the last three balls. Mitchell McClenaghan was then run out off the fourth delivery.

Gulraiz Sadaf took a single to give Sohail a chance to wipe out the three needed for win off the last ball. Sohail hoisted the last delivery to long-on where Ravi Bopara completed a brilliant catch.

As Karachi Kings started to celebrate the television umpire called “no ball” leaving two to win off the last ball but Sadaf was run out as they tried to take a couple, leaving the scores tied.

Lahore won the Super over by three runs, by scoring 11 and then conceding just eight in Sunial Narine’s over.

Arthur hoped all the players will learn from experiences in the PSL.

“We will sit down and assess,” said Arthur whose team need a win in one of their two matches to qualify for the play-offs. :”We made a lot of eeros, we cant get away from that. We will sit down and play at he back end of the tournament and in essence this is what the competition is and a development opportunity for our players. I though Shinwari will learn from this experience and he was devastated in the change room.”

Arthur praised Lahore batsman Agha Salman for his enterprising 50 in Lahore’s innings.

“Salman played well so he will also learn and I am happy that some players are developing in front of the massive audience and as long as the players are developing I am happy,” said Arthur, who is also Pakistan’s head coach.

Arthur hopes his team will still finish in top two.

“The destiny is in our hands, we have two games we playing goof enough cricket. It was a fantastic match which a tournament needed,” said Arthur.

Arthur hoped skipper Imad Wasim will be okay after hurting his head while taking a catch in the penultimate over.

“Imad has gone to hospital for CT scans he will be under observation but he seems okay.”Arthur said reverse swing in Karachi’s last ten overs made scoring difficult, as they managed just 77 in the last ten, after 85 in the first ten overs.

I think the ball started to reverse swing and that made scoring runs tough at the back end. The pitch was abrasive and it was tough to score but we were a bot ten runs shot. We defended well not been for the no-ball.

“You cant sit and grumble and people watching at home would be at the edge of their seats. It generates massive interest.”

Many heartbreaks expected in PSL final ticket sale

DUBAI: The trophy for the third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will be taken to Karachi before the March 25 final, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi announced on Saturday, as organizers hoped fans will quickly buy tickets for the final going to be held in Karachi.

“The trophy of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will be brought to Karachi and ticket sale will start soon,” said Najam Sethi.

TCS director marketing Naiyer Saifi promised to ensure an error-free ticket sale system. The system is error free and I can tell you that there is an immense pressure for the tickets” said Saifi.

“We have done everything in our hands for smooth sale of tickets. We expect that these tickets will be sold out quickly. You can buy at least five tickets on one Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC).”

“We are opening as many express centres as possible but our request is that there would be some people who will end up not getting any tickets so we need support. A lot of people will be heartbroken so they have to bear with us.”

Sethi said security experts will tour Karachi again to clear the venues for West Indies series.
“Reg DIckason and his men will be here during PSL final and we have contracted them to oversea the West Indies games as well. Their expert will stay back for seven days on our expense and conduct the security for West Indies series and this is part of our agreement with West Indies board.
“This will be a one-off series why because i told you earlier that this probably will be a loss making enterprise. The ideas wasn’t to make or losing money as it was meant to bring cricket back so this is the step in that direction.”
Sethi said there are talks on a tri-series in USA, for a period of five years.
“We have a separate agreement with the West Indies  in which we are exploring a tai-lateral series including Pak, WI and one other country possibly Bangladesh but it can be some other country which will be played in USA in next five years.
“The details about the venues, dates, financial model will be discussed later but in principle it has decided that three of us will play in USA.”

The National Stadium has undergone renovation and will be ready for the final soon, said Sethi.
