On Sunday, the National Bank Cricket Arena hosted the fifth game of the five-match series between Pakistan and New Zealand.

After winning the coin toss for the first time in the series, New Zealand’s captain Tom Latham chose to bowl first.

New Zealand’s decision to bowl first was vindicated by their exceptional batting performance, with captain Tom Latham and Will Young both scoring brilliant half-centuries to pile up a massive total on the score board.

Will Young scored the highest number of runs for New Zealand with a score of 87 off 91 balls, including eight boundaries and two sixes.

On the other hand, Latham played a quick innings, scoring 59 runs in just 58 deliveries and hitting five boundaries along the way.

Despite a brilliant half-century by Iftikhar Ahmed, Pakistan suffered their first defeat in the ongoing five-match series as the target set by New Zealand proved too difficult to chase

Pakistan’s loss in the fifth PAK vs NZ ODI caused them to drop to the third position in the ODI team rankings, losing their top spot.

WATCH: Rarest form of lightning captured on camera

The rarest form of lightning which even scientists are not sure how it is formed was captured on camera and shared on TikTok in the United Kingdom.

Mary-Ann Fletcher filmed the lightning and shared the short clip of it on her TikTok account.

“Apparently this is called ‘ball lightning’ which is the rarest form of lightning,” Mary-Ann wrote while sharing the video. She added: “It’s so rare that we don’t even know how it forms other than by heat, static, electricity, and humidity.”

Ball lightning remains an unexplained phenomenon that is described as luminescent, spherical objects that vary from pea-sized to several meters in diameter. In other words, they appear to be balls of electricity.

It is said to be last considerably longer than a normal lightning bolt.

Although scientists have proposed a number of hypotheses to explain the rare phenomenon over the centuries, the data on it remains scarce.

AstraZeneca vaccine effective against COVID-19 variants identified in India

AstraZeneca Plc’s COVID-19 vaccine is effective against Delta and Kappa variants, which were first identified in India, the company said on Tuesday, citing a study.

The study by the Oxford University investigated the ability of monoclonal antibodies in blood from recovered people and from those vaccinated to neutralize the Delta and Kappa variants, the statement said.

Last week, an analysis by the Public Health England (PHE) showed that vaccines made by Pfizer Inc and AstraZeneca offer high protection of more than 90% against hospitalization from the Delta variant.

The latest Oxford study results are built on the recent analysis by PHE, the company said.

The Delta variant is becoming the globally dominant version of the disease, the World Health Organization’s chief scientist said on Friday.

  • Oxford University explores anti-parasitic drug ivermectin as COVID-19 treatment

Oxford University explores anti-parasitic drug ivermectin as COVID-19 treatment

The University of Oxford said on Wednesday it was testing anti-parasitic drug ivermectin as a possible treatment for COVID-19, as part of a British government-backed study that aims to aid recoveries in non-hospital settings.

Ivermectin resulted in a reduction of virus replication in laboratory studies, the university said, adding that a small pilot showed giving the drug early could reduce viral load and the duration of symptoms in some patients with mild COVID-19

Dubbed PRINCIPLE, the British study in January showed that antibiotics azithromycin and doxycycline were generally ineffective against early-stage COVID-19.

While the World Health Organization, and European and U.S. regulators have recommended against using ivermectin in COVID-19 patients, it is being used to treat the illness in some countries, including India.

“By including ivermectin in a large-scale trial like PRINCIPLE, we hope to generate robust evidence to determine how effective the treatment is against COVID-19, and whether there are benefits or harms associated with its use,” co-lead investigator of the trial Chris Butler said.

People with severe liver conditions, who are on blood-thinning medication warfarin, or taking other treatments known to interact with ivermectin, will be excluded from the trial, the university added.

Ivermectin is the seventh treatment to be investigated in the trial, and is currently being evaluated alongside antiviral drug favipiravir, the university said.
