    PIA CEO meets PM, mulls steps to further shrink airline’s losses

    ISLAMABAD: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pakistan International Airline (PIA) Air Marshal (retd) Arshad Mehmood Malik called on Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday, ARY News reported.

    During the meeting, Malik briefed PM Khan about the matters related to the national flag carrier.


    Suggestions pertaining to the development of PIA, along with steps to improve its services were also discussed between the premier and the PIA head.

    The prime minister expressed satisfaction over the measures taken by the national airline lately and mulled over the strategy to shrink the losses incurred by PIA.

    It is worth mentioning that a day earlier, American authorities green- lighted Pakistan International Airlines for the direct flight operations to the United States, as per sources.

    The development came on the heels of a meeting of the Consul General of the United States of America JoAnne Wagner on Wednesday with the PIA CEO Arshad Malik, here at the PIA headquarters.

    Sources privy to the development said, the PIA has started its preparations for the direct flight operations to the US.

    The national flag carrier had shut its direct flight operations to the US owing to financial losses of the organization.

    PM Khan asks Punjab governor to not sign summary seeking raise in MPAs’ perks

    ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed the Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar to hold summary recommending an increase into salaries and perks of provincial legislators, ARY News reported on Thursday.

    Governor Sarwar has been stopped to sign summary which would approve hike in salaries and privileges to provincial lawmakers, sources said.

    The premier has directed to re-introduce the bill in the Punjab Assembly and immediate review on life-time facilities to the provincial lawmakers.

    PM Khan opposed Punjab government’s decision for allotment of a residence to the chief minister for whole life. The premier suggests limiting the duration up to three months, sources added.

    Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan had expressed deep disappointment over the decision of Punjab Assembly which had passed a bill for increments in salaries and privileges to provincial lawmakers including the chief minister.

    In his Twitter message, PM Khan said, he was ‘extremely disappointed by decision of Punjab Assembly’ regarding raise in salaries and privileges of the Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs), other minister and especially the chief minister.

    Continuing his sharp criticism against the provincial lawmakers, he termed the development as ‘ untenable’ move by legislators amid the deteriorated economic situation ‘ when we do not have resources to provide basic amenities to all our people’.

    He added that the increase in perks and pays could only be justified when prosperity returns to the country.

    On March 13, the Punjab Assembly had unanimously passed a bill increasing the salary, allowances, perks and privileges to each legislator.

    Prime Minister Khan is earning less than even federal ministers, who are getting the monthly salary of about Rs: 2.5 lac, ARY News found out from the pay slip of Khan.

    The basic salary of PM Khan is Rs: 1,07,280/= 

    Other monthly allowances worth Rs: 50,000/=

    Ad-hoc relief allowance is Rs: 21, 456/=

    Tax deduction from monthly salary stands at Rs: 4,595/=

    The net payable income of PM Khan is Rs: 1,96,000/=

    Moreover, Imran Khan is himself paying for security at his Bani Gala residence.

    It is pertinent to note here that just today, the premier expressed displeasure over Punjab Assembly’s decision to raise pays and privileges of MPAs, ministers and Chief Minsiter Usman Buzdar.

    “I am extremely disappointed by decision of Punjab Assembly to raise pays & privileges of MPAs, Ministers & esp CM. Once prosperity returns to Pak such a move cld be justified, but now, when we do not have resources to provide basic amenities to all our people, this is untenable,” the premier wrote on Twitter.

    ISLAMABAD: Underscoring the need for widening tax net, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said that reforms in Federal Board of Revenue inevitable, ARY News reported.

    Chairing a meeting to discuss the revenue collection and enhancing the tax base, PM Imran said that reforming the tax system and to widen tax net were the key points of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) manifesto. He said that tax reforms were inevitable for durable economic progress and development.

    He said that the prevailing taxation system was unjust and added that under the current system, the poor had to pay taxes more than their financial capacity and called for bringing the non-tax payers under the tax net.

    The prime minister also advocate the reforms in FBR to revive the trust of taxpayers in the taxation system.

    Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan, on February 19, had directed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to adopt new and reformed system for the tax collection and create ease for expansion of tax net in the country.

    “Tax defaulters are enemies of the nation, they should be exposed,” PM Khan had said while chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad regarding tax collection in Pakistan.

    ISLAMABAD: Hailing Germany’s role in diffusion tension between Pakistan and India, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said that Pakistan gave great importance to its relations with Berlin.

    Talking to German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, who called on the premier at his office, PM Imran said that Pak-Germany ties rooted in bonds of common democratic values.

    Matters of mutual interest, Pak-India tension, Afghan peace process, Indian atrocities in Kashmir, economic ties and other issues were came under discussion in the meeting.

    According to a declaration released by his office, PM Imran said that Germany played commendable role in the region. He demanded of the international community to take notice of the Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir.

    The prime minister said that Germany was an important partner of Pakistan in the national development and progress. He welcomed German investment in energy and automobile sectors. PM Imran asked the German envoy to provide technical assistance to Pakistan in the fields of education and health.

    On this occasion, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas invited Prime Minister Imran Khan to visit Berlin. He said that PM Imran’s decision to release Indian pilot as a peace gesture was admired globally. The minister praised Pakistan’s role in Afghan peace process.

    ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led federal government on Tuesday recovered Rs 530 million illegally sent abroad through its Assets Recovery Unit (ARU), ARY News reported.

    Well informed sources told that the recovered amount of Rs 530 million has been deposited into the national exchequer while more recoveries are also on the cards in the near future.

    “The amount has been recovered after tracing offshore properties and bank accounts”, the sources said.

    It was learnt by ARY News that major recovery was done from Singapore’s off-shore accounts but due to some reasons, the details in this regard are not being made public.

    It is pertinent to note here that, Prime Minister Imran Khan in his first address in the National Assembly after assuming charge of his office, had vowed to bring back the looted money.

    He promised strict accountability of the corrupt people and insured people of Pakistan that he will work for their betterment.

    Later in 2018, the government had established a task force to bring back money illegally shifted abroad from Pakistan.

    ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday reiterated his government’s resolve for providing conducive and business friendly environment to investors in the country.

    The premier said this while talking to Chief Executives of two Chinese companies including President of Global Sales XCMG Dr. Hanson Liu and Chairman HSS Group Syed Saman Hashmi, who called on him at his office in the federal capital, here today.

    During the meeting, PM Khan highlighted the steps being taken by his government to provide maximum facilities to the investors, reducing cost and improving ease of doing business in  Pakistan.

    On the occasion, Chief Executives of both Chinese companies expressed commitment of two billion dollars investment in Pakistan in Housing and manufacturing sectors.

    Commenting on the construction of five million houses, the PM said it is a flagship program of the government which will open up new opportunities for the allied industries and youth of the country.

    Prime Minister Imran Khan welcomed the investment and commitment of the Chinese company for investing in Pakistan.

    XCMG is Chinese number one leading total solution provider for global construction industry equipment and machinery. It is also intended to set up heavy equipment manufacturing plants in Pakistan.

    Earlier on January 18, US-based food and agriculture company Cargill had also decided to invest $200mn in Pakistan in agriculture, dairy farming, and cooking oil sectors.

    Marcel Smits, Chairman of the Asia Pacific and Head of Corporate Strategy at Cargill called on Prime Minister Imran Khan, and discussed various investment avenues in the country.

    Prime Minister Imran Khan welcomed the company’s decision to invest in the country and assured Smits of his government’s full support.

    Recent rains claimed 23 lives, injuries to 68: NDMA

    ISLAMABAD: At least 23 people lost their lives and 68 others got injured in rain related incidents in current spell of heavy rains in several parts of the country, said the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Monday.

    According to details released by the NDMA, 23 people were killed, 68 were injured, while as many as 2,600 houses and shops were destroyed in present spat of heavy downpour across the country.

    NDMA report shows heavy losses in FATA, where nine people were reported to be dead and 13 got injured, while six citizens lost their lives in Balochistan, the report read.

    Meanwhile, rescue and relief operations were underway in the affected areas as 10, 000 affectees have been provided with food packets, the authority said, adding that relief teams and relevant departments have been put on high alert to deal with any emergency situation.

    Personnel of the Pakistan army carried out rescue and relief operations in Lasbela, Makran and other flood-hit areas of Balochistan.

    According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), security forces reached the areas affected by flash floods caused by heavy rains and snowfall and moved the people trapped there to safety via military helicopters.

    PM Imran to chair cabinet meeting on Pak-India tension tomorrow

    ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has convened the federal cabinet meeting to discuss Pak-India tension on Thursday, ARY News Reported.

    FIA’s exemption plea from paper rules, appointment of board of directors at National Disaster Risk Management and National Bank of Pakistan and other issues would also be discussed in the meeting.

    Sources said that the meeting would also discuss the approval of Gilgit-Baltistan package, endorsement of various Memorandum of understanding (MoUs) signed with different countries, Korangi Fish Harbor and decisions of privatization committee.

    Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Asad Umar and other high officials would attend the meeting.

    Earlier in the day, the Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had chaired a special consultative meeting in the federal capital.

    Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and high-level officials attended the consultative meeting underway at Foreign Ministry to discuss tensed regional situation and heightened escalation between Pakistan and India.

    FM Qureshi said that Indian aggression for achieving its political motives will affect regional peace. He added that Islamabad will continue its diplomatic efforts for restoration of peace in the region.

    ISLAMABAD: A key meeting of the National Command Authority (NCA) has been underway on Wednesday to decide about Pakistan’s response to the Indian aggression, ARY News reported.

    The NCA meeting being held at the Prime Minister’s Office with PM Imran Khan in chair.

    The meeting being attended by the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), the services chiefs and other officials to discuss the situation.

    Director General Strategic Plan Division also attending the meeting apart of Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Finance Minister Asad Umar and the officials of the ministry of defence production.

    The military’s top leadership had recommended to summon a meeting of the NCA after the Indian aggression.

    The meeting of the NCA considering over the Indian aggression and saber rattling. It will devise an action plan to respond to the Indian aggression.

    A meeting of the National Security Council, chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan yesterday, discussed the Indian violation of Pakistan’s airspace. The meeting was attended by the top military brass, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Defence Minister Pervez Khattak.

    The meeting decided that Pakistan will chose the time and space to respond to the Indian aggression.

    The meeting had also decided to take the nation into confidence and summon a joint session of the Parliament.

    Earlier, on Tuesday Indian aircraft intruded the Line of Control (LoC) near Muzaffarabad sector, however they scrambled back following timely response from the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).
