LAHORE: The democracy not meant to holding elections only, it means a system to provide basic rights to citizens, Chief Justice of Pakistan said here on Saturday.
Addressing the licence distribution ceremony to Supreme Court lawyers at Lahore Registry, Chief Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani said the judiciary will intervene wherever the constitution and the law will be violated.
Independent judiciary has crucial role to play in a democracy, which ensures protection of the basic rights of citizens, the Chief Justice said.
He said the democracy not meant to holding elections only, it means to build a mechanism to provide equal rights to citizens.
He said the judiciary have no force to implement its decisions, it is constitutional responsibility of the state institutions to enforce the orders of the judiciary.
"The judiciary will intervene wherever the constitution and the law will be violated," the chief justice said.
Justice Jillani said that the lawyers should assist the courts to provide justice. He said a strong Bar helps judiciary to decide cases independently.
The Chief Justice distributed certificates among the lawyers who were enrolled for practice in the Supreme Court.
