HAMPSHIRE: Pakistani-British Councillor Sophia Choudhary has become the first female Muslim Mayor of Rushmoor Borough Council of the United Kingdom.
In a ceremony, the former mayor councilor – Jacqui Vosper – on Tuesday handed over the charge to Sophia. The ceremony was attended by Sophia’s friends and relatives besides council members.
On the occasion, she expressed her condolences on the recent Manchester attack saying that incidents like these can unfortunately divide nations.
A large number of Pakistani-origin Britishers also participated in the ceremony.
The new Mayor councillor hails from Azad Kashmir and her father, Saleem Choudhary, had also served as Mayor of Rushmoor Borough Council in 2002.
