KARACHI: Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani on Saturday stated that corruption cannot be rooted out from the nation until the presence of the law of plea bargain.

Addressing a seminar at a university, the Senate chairman said that the National Accountability Bureau was not around to eliminate corruption, but was rather the cause of the increase in corruption.

Mr. Rabbani dispelled the impression of corruption among politicians and said that a lot of negative propaganda has been perpetuated against them.

“You cannot have a law for others, and another one for the politicians,” he said.

Mr. Rabbani said that dictators banned student and trade unions and intellectuals, which changed the purpose for which Pakistan was achieved.

He said that former military dictator Zia-ul-Haq made several constitutional amendments which led religious extremism to flourish in the country.

He expressed disappointment that successive democratic governments failed to prioritise health and education.
